Déco Mycø

Limited collection of decorative objects in mycelium edited by the Galerie Sana Moreau (Paris).
Each object is unique, created by nature…

We present a small capsule of two objects: vase and decorative bowl.

…A vase that literally grows like a mushroom. The new biomaterial, created in the S.Lab laboratory by Ukrainian biologists Yevgeny Tomilyn and Yulia Bialetska, became the inspiration for the creation of this decor collection.

After the first experiments in this direction in collaboration with the architect and eco-activist Yova Yager, which were presented at Paris Design Week in 2021, the Galerie Sana Moreau has launched a new mycø decoration collection.

Co-creation with nature

The biocomposite made from mushroom mycelium and technical hemp stems is a plastic substance that can take a given shape.
The bionic shapes of these objects were created from ceramics by famous Ukrainian ceramists Andriy and Olesya Voznycki (Natura Ceramica studio). After that, shell forms are made on a 3D printer, a substrate is placed on them under special temperature conditions.
In these forms, the object grows in two weeks. Then the finished object is removed from the mold and stabilized at a certain temperature.
After heat treatment, the growth process of the biomaterial stops. In other words, you can go on vacation and your vase will stay the same size when you return.

Shades of color, from ivory to all shades of beige and brown, depend on how long the material has been in shell form after the object has grown. After two weeks, the material begins to acquire darker shades.

The texture of this biological material is incredibly delicate, it really looks like the tender skin of a mushroom. The surface of this object wants to be touched and caressed like a kitten.

These items are extremely lightweight yet durable. Each item is unique, you can only repeat the shape, but you can never repeat the texture and color shades.

This material is not afraid of water – no problem if a few drops of water get on the surface. You can use a fruit bowl, the material is completely safe. But you cannot pour water into such objects. If you want to put flowers in a vase, place a glass goblet inside the vase and pour water into it.

The objects blend perfectly in your interior with any surface: wood, stone, plastic, metal, glass, with which this natural material creates an unusual contrast.

Biological research

The goal of the S.Lab laboratory experiments was to create a biodegradable material that could replace plastic packaging in the future (the mycelium material decomposes completely in the soil within a month). But the beauty of the material is inspired by the creation of decorative objects.

S.Lab is a successful Ukrainian startup that has received more than a dozen international awards and continues to improve technology. Currently, S.Lab is working on the possibilities of creating packaging from mycelium on an industrial scale, as well as furniture and building materials.
